Order the CD

We had a LOT of fun making this CD, here are a few notes:

- Our young children were "the chorus" on tracks 3 & 4, what a riot!
- Track 3 was written by Pat for the young at heart "very late at night";
- Track 4 is about a wild, independent valley fiddler who, in the end, finally snaps (not hard if you are "half snapped" to begin with);
- The first song on track 5 is a "Canadian Sea Shanty" ballad;
- Track 13 is for all of our friends from "down east". Thanks for your continued support.
- The CD ends with a marchpast by the worlds first and only mandolin marching band - these are Jacobite ghosts playing "The Black Bear", really, they are! (we don't take ourselves too seriously, now do we?).

Track 1 - WHISKY IN THE JAR - Traditional

Chorus:
Mush a roorum a toorum a day
Whack fall the daddyoo
Whack fall the daddyoo
There's whisky in the jar

Verses:
As I was going over that far famed Kerry mountain
I met with Captain Farrell and his money he was countin'
I first produced my pistol and I then produced my rapier
Saying stand and deliver for you are the bold deceiver

I counted out his money and it was a pretty penny
Put it in my pocket and I gave it to my Jenny
She sighed and she swore that she never would deceive me
But the devil take the women for you never can believe ‘em

I went into my chamber just to take a little slumber
Drempt of gold and jewels and the reason was no wonder
Well Jenny took my pistols and she filled them up with water
And she called for Captain Farrell just to come unto the slaughter

It was early the next morning as I arose to travel
Up stepped a band of troopers and likewise Captain Farrell
I then produced my pistols for she'd stole away my rapier
But I couldn't fire the water so a prisoner I was taken

If any man can aid me it's me brother in the army
I don't know where he's stationed be it Cork or in Kilarney
Together we'll go roving through the green hills of Kilkenny
I know he'll treat me better than my darling sportin' Jenny

Track 2 - THIEF ON THE RUN - Written by Bill Curley and Paddy "G"

Chorus:
I steal her love whenever he ain't lookin'
And steal away before the mornin' sun
All the time lookin' over my left shoulder
Down the street like a thief on the run

Verses:
No one sees me standing in the shadows
No one knows that it will soon be time
To tip-toe like a tomcat up the stairway
To hold a woman that I wish was mine

I long to see her signal from the window
Then its safe for her to let me in
I wait a while then slip into the shadows
Till I arrive at her backdoor again, where ...

I often wonder if there'll come a time
When I can make that woman really mine
But as I sit and watch her here beside me
I realize that that could never be, so ...

Track 3 - PINK ELEPHANTS - Written by Paddy "G"

Chorus:
Pink elephants they can't fly
Pink elephants they can't fly
Pink elephants they can't fly
And I don't see why they try

Verses:
Saw an elephant up in a tree
Flappin' his ears and making like a bee
Thought it only fair that I should let him see
The truth about the matter, that...

Once I saw a boy, he broke his only toy
He sat there for a while but soon began to smile
His eyes lit up like candles, he began to play
He dreamed he was a camel then he started to say, "It's all because...

Then I knew this man who had to take a stand
All his friends told him to go, they thought he'd surely know
Convention was his misery, of manners he'd the knack
Inspection wasn't inwardly, he could only come back with...

And someday you may find that you're the next in line
You'll wonder if you should, you'll wonder if you could
The trap is there, you'll find it out, no need to worry now
Just sit back there, don't bother much
You know you always knew how all those...

Track 4 - EMERY PROMETER (A Tribute to Joan Finnigan) - Written by Paddy "G" and Jim Gillissie

I'm my own kind of man, me, Emery Prometer
I make the world to suit the likes of me
But I say that there's a price to be considered
If a man will hold his head up high

Now you take the wife and me, well there's not many others
Find a life that's half so fine as we
Still I say that there's a price to be considered
If a man will call his soul his own

Yes I am the best damn Fiddler, yes I am the best
All the way from Calabogie down to Kaladar
I'm my own kind of man, me, Emery Prometer
I make the world to suit the likes of me

You see, at the mid summer dances and all the weddin's round us
I play the tunes they will not soon forget
And if I did take a drop a little more than I ought to
It was just to prime the tunes more fine than me

Yes I am the best damn Logger, yes I am the best
No I won't go on your welfare - to hell with all the rest
I'm my own kind of man, me, Emery Prometer
I make the world to suit the likes of me

I'm my own kind of man, me, Emery Prometer
I make the world to suit the likes of me
Yes, I'm my own kind of man, me, Emery Prometer
I make the world to suit the likes of me

Yes I am the best damn Fiddler, yes I am the best
All the way from Calabogie down to Kaladar
I'm my own kind of man, me, Emery Prometer
I make the world to suit the likes of me
I make the world to suit the likes of me

Track 5A - MARY ANN - Traditional

Oh then fare thee well my own true love
Fare thee well my dear
For the ship is a waiting, the winds blow high
And I am bound away for the sea, my Mary Ann
Yes, and I am bound away for the sea, my Mary Ann

Oh yonder can't you see the Dove
A sitting on the style
She is mourning the loss of her own true love
As I do now for you my dear, my Mary Ann
As I do now for you my dear, my Mary Ann

Oh a lobster boiling in a pot
Or a bluefish on the hook
They are sufferin' long but it's nothing like
The ache I bear for you my dear, my Mary Ann
Yes, the ache I bear for you my dear, my Mary Ann

And had I but a flask of Gin
And sugar here for two
And a great big bowl for to mix it all in
I'd pour a drink for you my dear, my Mary Ann
Yes, I'd pour a drink for you my dear, my Mary Ann

Track 5B - SHORES OF AMERICAY - Traditional

Chorus:
So, fare thee well my darling Mary Ann
We sail at the break of day
Over the raging foam for to seek a home
On the shores of Americay

Verses:
I'm bidding farewell to the land of my youth
The home that I love so well
And the mountains grand in my own native land
I'm bidding them all farewell

It's just for the want of the climate I'm goin'
It's not for the want of fame
Ah, but fortune bright pray shine over me
And give me a glorious name

Our land may be poor but this I am sure
We're welcome wherever we roam
So at the dawn of the day we'll be sailing away
For the shores of Americay

Track 7 - DESTINY ( The White Man's Lament) - Written by Paddy "G"

Chorus:
Oh - proud and mighty one
Bow down to the will
Of the bright, white saviour of your // pagan skill
Lay down your wife
Your spirit and your life
And walk with the shadow of your destiny

Verses:
They came across this great white land
They came from Europe, those distant sands
They came with their freedom and their sla--vory
They came to bury on this lone prairie

They cut down the forests, a virgin's lament
They spoiled the waters, all living was spent
They drove from the flat lands the bison's wonder
Thought no one could ever extinguish that thunder

As time stumbled on in numbers so grand
They couldn't stop the ravage of land
They sent you away to their Hierarchy
Then they left you to deal with Descendants of me

Track 9 - CHANGE YOUR MIND - Written by Bill Curley

Tomorrow morning sunshine is a long way down the road
And the chilly winds are knockin' at my door
Been thinkin' ‘bout you goin' ever since you let me know
And I don't feel much like thinkin' any more
Know'in that you won't be here to warm the nights so long
To chase away my foolish fears with a smile and your song
I would climb up any mountain or die a thousand times
If I thought I could ever change your mind

Change your mind, change your mind
If I thought I could ever change your mind

There's whiskey on my table and a teardrop on my face
And a funny feelin' way down deep inside
I can hear that whistle blowin' out your farewell song to me
As the train goes disappearin' down the line
The west wind from the mountain brings snowdrifts down my way
Winter's such a lonesome time since you went away
I would climb up any mountain or die a thousand times
If I thought I could ever change your mind

Change your mind, change your mind
If I thought I could ever change your mind
Change your mind, change your mind
If I thought I could ever change your mind

If you're ever ridin' highway and some day passin' through
I'd be mighty glad if you would telephone
It'd only take a minute just to say hello
To a lonesome boy a long way from his home
Sunshine dying now tells me evening's drawing near
The sounds of night leave me feeling sad ‘cause you're no longer here
I would climb up any mountain or die a thousand times
If I thought I could ever change your mind
I would climb up any mountain or die a thousand times
If I thought I could ever change your mind

Change your mind Change your mind
If I thought I could ever change your mind
Change your mind Change your mind
If I thought I could ever change your mind.

Track 10 - THE NIGHT PAT MURPHY DIED - Traditional

Chorus:
Oh, that's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy
That's how they showed their honour and their pride
They said it was a sin and a shame
Then they winked at one another
Oh, everything in the Wakehouse went
The night Pat Murphy died

Verses:
Oh, the night that Paddy Murphy died
Is a night I'll never forget
All the lads got roaring drunk
And some ain't sober yet
As long as the bottle was passed around
Everyone was feeling fine
Then McAlpine came with his squeezebox
Some music for to pine

Mrs. Murphy sat in the corner
A pouring out her grief
While Kelly and his gang
The dirty robbin' thieves
They slipped into an ante room
And a bottle of whisky stole
Then they placed the bottle with the corpse
Just to keep the liquor cold

Everything was going fine
Oh there was no row at all
Till Finnegan told O'Callahan
He had a lot of gall
I thought that this might start a fight
And well sure enough it did
For O'Callahan had scrawled his name
Right on the coffin lid

At eight o'clock in the morning
The funeral left the house
Everyone but Mrs. Murphy
Was at least half soused
Someone asked old Brannigan
If he knew just who had died
Says he "I'm really not quite sure"
"I just came for the ride"

The funeral stopped along the way
Outside of a saloon
They all went in at half past eight
And staggered out at ‘noon
Then they continued to the grave site
In a reverential line
Until they reached the grave and found
They had left the corpse behind

Track 12 - GYPSY ROVER - Traditional

Chorus:
Ah di doo ah di doo da day
Ah di doo ah di day di
He whistled and he sang and the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady

Verses:
The gypsy rover came over the hill
Down through the valley so shady
He whistled and he sang till the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady

She left her father's castle gate
She left her own fond lover
She left her fortune and her estate
All to go with the gypsy rover

Her father saddled up his fastest steed
And roamed the valleys all over
He sought his daughter at great speed
And that whistling gypsy rover

He came at last to a mansion fine
Down by the river Clady
And there was music and there was wine
For the gypsy and his lady

But he is no gypsy my father she said
He's lord of these lands all over
And I will stay till my dying day
With my whistling gypsy rover

Track 13A - I'SE THE BYE - Traditional

Chorus:
Hip yer partner Sally Thibeault, hip yer partner Sally Brown
Fogo, Twillingate, Morton's Harbour all around the circle

Verses:
I'se the bye that builds the boat
And I'se the bye that sails her
I'se the bye that catches the fish
And sends 'em home to Lizer

I took Lizer to a dance
And faith but she could travel
And every step that she did take
Was up to her knees in gravel

Sods and rinds to cover yer flake
Cake and tea for supper
Cod fish in the spring o' the year
Fried in maggoty butter

I don't want yer maggoty fish
That's no good for winter
I could buy as good as that
Down in Bonavista

Susan White she's out of sight
Her petticoat wants a border
Old Craig (Sam) Oliver in the dark
He kissed her in the corner

Hooray and up she rises, hooray and up she rises
Hooray and up she rises, early in the morning

Verses:
What are you going to do with the drunken sailor
What are you going to do with the drunken sailor
What are you going to do with the drunken sailor
Early in the morning

Put him in a longboat ‘til he's sober
Put him in a longboat ‘til he's sober
Put him in a longboat ‘til he's sober
Early in the morning

Shave his belly with a rusty raiser
Shave his belly with a rusty raiser
Shave his belly with a rusty raiser
Early in the morning

Track 14 - LEAVING OF LIVERPOOL - Traditional

Chorus:
So fare thee well my own true love
For when I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my Darlin' when I think of thee

Verses:
Fare thee well to you my own true love
I am going far away
I am bound for Californ-i-a
But I know that I'll return someday

I have shipped on a Yankee sailing ship
Davey Crocket is her name
And Burgess is the Captain of her
And I fear that she's a floating Hell

Oh the sun is on the harbour love
And I know I must be away
But I fear that it will be some long long time
Before I return again

Track 15 - YE JACOBITES BY NAME - Traditional

Chorus:
Ye Jacobites by name lend an ear, lend an ear
Ye Jacobites by name lend an ear
Ye Jacobites by name, your faults I must proclaim
Your doctrines I must blame and ye shall hear, ye shall hear
Your doctrines I must blame and ye shall hear

Verses:
What makes heroic strife famed afar, famed afar
What makes heroic strife now famed afar
What makes heroic strife to wet the assassin's knife
And to halt a parents life with bloody war, bloody war
To halt a parents life with bloody war

So let your schemes alone in this state, in this state
Let your schemes alone now in this state
Let your schemes alone, adore the rising sun
And leave a man undone unto his fate, to his fate
Leave a man undone unto his fate
